Howard Ten Broeck Lutz was born in Philadelphia in 1921. Lutz was appointed to the history faculty at the University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire in 1957, where he was instrumental in the development of the Scandinavian Studies program. He retired from UW--Eau Claire in 1989. A Quaker and a pacifist, Lutz was a conscientious objector in World War II.
